JSEM - The Jewish Society's Egalitarian Minyan

Shalom! Welcome to the page for the Egalitarian Minyan, also lovingly known as EgalMin or GalChadash

EgalMin is an inclusive, informal and active community which is famous for its alternative, egalitarian Kabbalat Shabbat services. We aim to create a home for Jews from all backgrounds, including those who identify with the Liberal, Reform and Masorti movements. Being a part of EgalMin means being part of a community which takes great joy in prayer and challenges itself to engage in learning, whilst also providing a social hub for its members and continuing to be an active part of the wider JSoc community.

“EgalMin has given me many a song-filled Friday night, lots of things to study that aren't my degree, many a hilarious email and lots of cheese, grapes and kettle chips!” Sarah Sheppard, Robinson

"Whenever I visit Cambridge for Shabbat, the EgalMin is an amazing place to unwind and relax. The melodies are beautiful and I always leave feeling refreshed." Daniel Grabiner, ex-UJS President

Click here to join the EgalMin mailing list or keep on reading to find out more!

You can now listen to the EgalMin recording session from Lent 2010 by clicking on this lovely, lovely link - http://gal-chadash.bandcamp.com. For the moment the tracks can be streamed but not downloaded. Further updates to follow.

Egal-KabShab: “I can honestly say I have yet to go to a KabShab service as musical or ruach-filled as EgalMin... or indeed one with so much schmoozing and such entertaining, drawn-out announcements.“ Emma Weleminsky-Smith, Selwyn

For a relaxed, friendly and soulful Shabbat experience, led by a member of the community, join us any Friday evening at 7pm in the Latimer Room in Clare College Old Court. If you haven’t been before, you can find the Munby Room by turning left out of King’s porter’s lodge, taking a few steps towards King’s bar and taking the staircase to the left before the doors. Keep climbing and you’ll find us right at the top.

Egal-Socials: “What’s cooler than being cool? EgalMin socials. Where else would I find kosher nibbles and such delightful company all in one place?” Zach Eilon, Emmanuel (graduated 2010)

Supported by LJ students, Jeneration and Marom, we aim to host multiple social events every term, with past socials varying from theatre trips, to pancake days ('Yom ha'Blintz), to our very own May week picnic. This term, you can look forward to new, innovative ideas as well as the return of an old classic! So keep your ears to the ground and don’t miss out on all the excitement!

Egal-Learning: “Learning stuff is so much more fun when you know you won’t have to revise it in exam term! Egal-learning is a great way to keep up with the issues that affect our community and study with fantastic teachers.” Robin Cooke, Queens’

EgalMin strives to bring you the very best of egalitarian, Jewish educators, with all sorts of lovely folk lined up for the year ahead. Recent favourites have included chazzan Jacky Chernett and Rabbi Shoshana Boyd Gelfand so keep your eyes peeled for more opportunities to fill your head with interesting stuff!

Egal-Student Shabbat: “Beth Shalom Shabbats are a great way to meet the non-student community and a great source of lunch” Elliot Steinberg, Homerton

Once every year the local Reform community, Beth Shalom, invites EgalMin to join them and lead the Shabbat morning service. This is always a lovely experience and allows our two communities to maintain a close relationship. Beth Shalom also invites students to join them for Shabbat throughout the year – services start at 10:30am on Saturday and conclude with Kiddush.

Egal-Reps: Each calendar year EgalMin is run by a new pair of reps, who devote their time to organising services, socials, learning and much, much more. It is these chipper, young folk who are here to answer all your Egal-questions and help you solve all your Egal-problems, as well as flooding your inbox with enthusiastic Egal-mails to brighten up your day.

For 2013, your Egal-reps are Abi Magrill (acm203) and Mossy Wittenberg (agw45)
